HN200: Introduction to Classical Medicine (July 2023/June 2024)

Embark on a transformative year-long journey with Critical Loyalty’s Classical Medicine and Holistic Health Program. This comprehensive program delves into the rich history of medicine, explores the connections between Classical Medicine and Islamic Scripture, and equips students with practical skills in holistic health coaching. The program encompasses a wide range of topics, promoting a deep understanding of the subject matter.

Throughout the program, students will explore the following areas:

  1. A Brief History of Medicine: Tracing the origins of medicine and its subsequent developments over time.

  2. Supplementary Books and Readings: Delving into additional texts and readings that complement the study of classical medicine.

  3. Comparative Analysis: Examining key differences between the Nei Jing (Chinese medical text) and Islamic teachings.

  4. Lifestyle: Living in Accordance with Nature: Exploring the importance of aligning our lifestyle choices with the principles of nature.

  5. Medical Philosophy: Understanding the concepts of opposition, three powers, four images, five phases, and six climates/connections.

  6. Nature and Therapy: Exploring the relationship between the five motions, six climates, seasonal and daily influences on treatment, and cosmological phases.

  7. Ruh (Soul) and Essence of the Human Body: Investigating the spiritual and essential aspects of the human body.

  8. Patterns and Divisions: Analyzing directional patterns, vessel patterns, division patterns, sinew patterns, and skin divisions.

  9. Circulations within the Body: Exploring the circulations of evil (Shaytan) and good within the body.

  10. Causes of Illness: Investigating the influences of climate, emotions, lifestyle, and obstructions on health.

  11. Diagnosis: Developing skills in pulse taking, channel observation, palpation, and recognizing the 25 different types of people.

  12. Treatment and Needling Principles: Understanding the principles and techniques of treatment, including acupuncture and other modalities.

By the end of the program, students will achieve the following competencies:

  • Mastering the foundational concepts of classical medicine through an analysis of the classical text Huang Di Nei Jing.
  • Recognizing the interplay between Classical Medicine and Islamic Scripture.
  • Applying the teachings of the classics to clinical situations for enhanced patient care.
  • Describing and evaluating patient presentations using the concepts derived from classical texts and Islamic teachings.
  • Identifying similarities and differences between classical medicine and Islamic Scripture.
  • Grading and assessment will be based on the practical application of principles through homework assignments and active class participation. Additionally, students will be required to complete a minimum of six case studies to graduate.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded the Critical Loyalty Diploma of Classical Medicine and Holistic Health (Hakīm degree). Graduates will also earn the distinction of being Critical Loyalty Certified Holistic Health Coaches, making them uniquely equipped to provide holistic health guidance within the Islamic World.
