TAJ02: Qaṣidat al-Khāqāniyyah (Jan 2023)

Course Overview: Step into the rich tapestry of history with TAJ02: Qaṣīdah Khāqāniyyah, as we delve into the earliest book of tajwīd. This captivating course guides you through the labyrinth of time, connecting you to the dawn of tajwīd through the verses of Qaṣīdah Khāqāniyyah, composed by Abū Muzāḥim al-Khāqānī (d. 325 H).

A Glimpse through Time Immerse yourself in the worldview of the originators as we explore the first and oldest tajwīd text, Qaṣīdah Khāqāniyyah. Al-Khāqānī, an erudite scholar of the 4th century affiliated with the Abbasids, unfolds the earliest contours of tajwīd. As a significant figure in the institutionalization and codification of Tajwīd, his composition offers unique insights. Notably, the language of his time lacked terms like “Tajwīd” and “Makhraj,” necessitating alternative expressions.

A Window into the Past and Present Set against the backdrop of al-Khāqānī’s era, this course reveals the profound interplay between the past and present. The curriculum extends beyond mere rules, charting a riveting course through history. Witness how scholars of bygone eras approached the Qur’ānic reading, illuminating perspectives that continue to resonate.

Guided by Historical Discourse Drawing from the commentary by Abū ‘Amr al-Dānī, a scholar from a century later, Ustad Uthman Khan,  will illuminate the text’s significance. Nearly two decades ago, Uthman Khan pioneered teaching the Khāqāniyyah text in English, igniting a resurgence of scholarly engagement. With the text having found its way to various scholars, Uthman Khan brings the legacy back to Critical Loyalty.

A Journey Beyond Rules While the course does not delve deeply into rules, it offers an unparalleled exploration of history’s embrace of the Qur’ānic recitation. As you traverse this intellectual terrain, you’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of how tajwīd has evolved over time.

We invite you to join us on this odyssey through the annals of tajwīd history, uncovering the timeless wisdom of Abū Muzāḥim al-Khāqānī’s Qaṣīdah Khāqāniyyah and rekindling its flame within the heart of Critical Loyalty.
